Walking Football - Match Report!

At the end of June our new Community Activities Manager Mas headed out to our Walking Football group in Blockley which runs every Friday from 9.30-11am at Blockley Sports Field to partake in a match. Here he tells us all about his experience:
“I had been in contact with Tony, the volunteer that manages the walking football with the intention of meeting him and the group he supports. I had mentioned that I used to play football regularly but hadn’t done so for a few years due an Achillies injury and thought maybe the walking nature of this group would be a good way back into football. Although I was expecting to meet Tony later on in the month, he actually reached out and signed me up for a game due to a last-minute cancellation. So I went out to Blockley to introduce myself to the members and to make a special guest appearance on the pitch.
The game was played in 4 x 20 minute quarters in the searing hot summer sun. The guys took everything somewhat seriously as they were all very competitive but did so light-heartedly. They referred to me as a “fit young lad” which was nice, however, the tag did put some pressure on me to perform.
Trying not to run was quite difficult to get used to, however despite this rule, the players did actually walk very fast and ran/jogged when not in possession. They all encouraged each other, despite being on different teams, which was very pleasant to see and hear. They knew how each player moved and what sorts of positions they took up, moreover, played off the shoulder of their opposite number. They were all very able players and wanted to win.
The game was very evenly matched and ended up in a well-deserved 6-6 draw. With respect to my performance, well, I hit the post twice, worked their exceptional keeper several times, please note that this gentleman had next-level reflexes and thus made some ridiculous saves. Thankfully I did live up to the hype and scored an exceptional debut hat-trick – class is permanent.
The game was surprisingly physical and very tiring, these guys are all very fit and very active, I really need to up my cardio. Despite destroying my joints and muscles and spending my weekend in pain, I thoroughly enjoyed myself and can’t wait to play again!”
